IB Maths Tutor Hong Kong — AA & AI, HL & SL
Expert IB Mathematics preparation for Hong Kong international school students. Whether your child takes AA or AI, HL or SL, our specialist tutors deliver the focused support they need to score a 6 or 7.
The IB Diploma Mathematics courses are among the most demanding — and most consequential — subjects your child will take. The grade they achieve directly affects university admissions, scholarship eligibility, and whether they meet the minimum requirements for their chosen programme. Getting the right support early makes a significant difference.
At Interactive Tutors, we specialise exclusively in IB Maths. Our tutors know both the Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretation (AI) syllabi inside out, at both Standard Level and Higher Level. Sessions are structured, exam-focused, and personalised to each student’s school, pacing, and target grade.
IB Math AA vs AI — What’s the Difference?
The most common question IB families ask us. Here’s what you need to know before choosing.
Designed for students who enjoy pure mathematics, abstract reasoning, and proof. The course covers calculus, algebra, geometry, and statistics with an emphasis on mathematical rigour.
- Required for Engineering, Physics, Maths, CS
- Paper 1 (no GDC), Paper 2 (GDC), HL Paper 3
- SL: 150 hrs · HL: 240 hrs
- HL adds complex numbers, differential equations, Maclaurin series
Designed for students who want to apply mathematics to real-world problems. The course emphasises statistics, modelling, and technology — with significantly less pure calculus than AA.
- Suited to Business, Social Sciences, Medicine, Psychology
- Strong statistics & modelling focus throughout
- SL: 150 hrs · HL: 240 hrs
- HL adds complex numbers, graph theory, Voronoi diagrams

Standard Level vs Higher Level
The level your child chooses has a direct impact on university options. Here’s how they compare across both courses.
| Standard Level (SL) | Higher Level (HL) | |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching Hours | 150 hrs | 240 hrs |
| Exam Papers | Paper 1 & 2 | Paper 1, 2 & 3 |
| Internal Assessment | 20% of grade | 20% of grade |
| Difficulty | Substantial but manageable | University-level in places |
| University Requirements | General diploma entry, Humanities, Arts | Engineering, Physics, Maths, CS, Finance |
| Our Recommendation | Students not pursuing STEM at degree level | Any student targeting a top STEM programme |

Francky is a great maths teacher who has given me confidence throughout secondary school, IGCSE, and now IB. He created an entire spreadsheet mapping out all the IB course content to track my progress. He explains things clearly yet efficiently, meaning we can cover a wide breadth of material in just a few lessons. I am always one step ahead of the school — even as an IB HL student.
Francky has allowed me to become considerably more comfortable in topics with which I previously struggled and his lessons are very engaging. He is clear and articulate in his teaching which makes learning very enjoyable.
The tutor is fantastic at explaining difficult topics and breaking them down so they are easier to understand. Very methodical, and teaches alternative perspectives that have been invaluable for my Paper 3 investigations.
Frequently Asked Questions
AA (Analysis and Approaches) focuses on pure mathematics — calculus, proof, and abstract reasoning. It is required for most STEM university programmes. AI (Applications and Interpretation) focuses on statistics, modelling, and real-world applications, and is better suited to students heading into business, social sciences, or medicine. We tutor both courses at SL and HL.
This depends on their intended university course. Engineering, physics, maths, and CS degrees typically require HL. For humanities, arts, and most social science programmes, SL is sufficient. We help families make this decision in our free consultation based on the student’s school, strengths, and goals.
Ideally from the start of IB Year 1. Starting early allows students to build strong foundations and stay ahead of the school’s teaching pace. That said, we also take on students mid-course or in the final months before exams — targeted revision can still make a significant difference to the final grade.
Yes — fully. The IA is worth 20% of the final grade and many students underestimate how much work it requires. We guide students through topic selection, mathematical exploration, write-up structure, and the final polish to ensure they maximise their marks.
Both. Our centre is in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, and we also run fully interactive online sessions with a shared digital whiteboard. Many families use a mix of both depending on the week.
